EDITORIAL GUIDELINES Modern Agriculture Magazine PREFACE Every effort will be made to adhere to the manuscript style guidelines published in the Chicago Manual of Style. While more formal and complex than many other style books, the Chicago Manual reflects the impact of new technology on the editing and publishing process, and it spells out, in greater detail and with many more examples, the procedures for dealing with these changes. A number of common stylistic points for writers to keep in mind: Use serial commas. Ex: red, white, and blue NOT red, white and blue Names of states are spelled out, except in lists and tabular matters. Preference is given to expressing dates in the sequence day-month-year, without internal punctuation. Ex: 26 February 1978 Names of months should always be spelled out in text, whether alone or in dates. Professional titles that precede a name are capitalized; titles that follow a name a set in lower case. Ex: Associate Editor Paul Siegel OR Paul Siegel, associate editor The abbreviations etc., i.e., e.g., the abbreviations for academic degrees, and titles that follow a name are parenthetical and should therefore be offset by commas. Ex: Paul Siegel, Ph.D., and the staff at EOM Inc. In scientific and statistical copy, percentages are represented by the symbol '%;' in humanistic copy, the word 'percent.' Ex: 15%, a small percent of the total Numerals should be used for the numbers 1-99. Hundred, thousand, million, etc., should be spelled out. Ex: 99 million In mathematical, statistical, technical, or scientific text, physical quantities, such as distances, lengths, areas, volumes, pressure, an so on, are expressed in figures, whether whole numbers or fractions. Ex: 1 1/2 million OR 1.5 million NOT one and a half million Measurements, such as meters, kilometers, acres, etc., should be spelled out on first reference and abbreviated on subsequent references with no space between the number and the abbreviation. Ex: You say 5 meters, I say 5m. All acronyms should be spelled out on first reference followed immediately by the acronym in parenthesis. The acronym may be used alone on all subsequent references. Ex: Modern Agriculture (MA) Titles and subtitles of published books, pamphlets, proceedings and collections, periodicals, newspapers and sections of newspapers, etc., are set in italics when they are mentioned in the text. Ex: EOM follows Chicago Style editorial guidelines Articles and parts of books are enclosed in quotation marks and attributed. Do NOT include references to Web-sites or figures in text, parenthetical documentation, or footnotes as they will be deleted. FEATURE ARTICLES Modern Agriculture is dedicated to promoting the uses and benefits for these site-specific management tools through publishing industry news and feature application articles that advance the integration, seamless application, and cost-effective uses of all contributing technologies. Articles should be written with an emphasis on discussing how the technology or user is overcoming difficulties previously experienced in the industry or application, and relate this to any cost or time benefits that are realized. We are also interested in articles that discuss the integration of unique technologies as an answer to providing new methods for gaining increases in efficiency, ease-of-use, and cost-savings. All articles should present material using the following outline: State the focus of the article in engaging and informative language in the first several paragraphs. Do NOT make statements or claims in the lead paragraphs which assert, "In this paper we will discuss..., prove..., or learn...!" Use the body of the article to develop the premise outlined in the lead paragraphs. This is where the bulk of the information is presented. Use quotes and proper attribution to support claims about a product or process. Closing paragraphs are used to summarize what has previously been stated, and to discuss possible future developments. Please include 2-3 sentences about the author(s) at the end of the article. Include any experience or credentials directly related to topic of article, place of employment and title, and any contact information. Please also include any additional information that may be useful to readers at the end of the article, including company names, addresses, Web-sites, E-mail addresses, phone and fax numbers, etc. LENGTH Target the length of each feature article to between 1,500 and 2,000 words. ARTWORK We rely on the use of remote imagery (where applicable), photographs, maps, etc., to graphically illustrate feature article topics and enhance the design of the magazine. If for some reason you are personally unable to acquire imagery to illustrate your article, please advise us as to where we can best find appropriate contacts/images. We will accept imagery in the following formats: traditional photographs slides digital images saved as EPS, TIFF, GIF, JPEG, or BMP formats, at least 300 dpi, in CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow Black) NOT RGB (Red, Green, Blue) OR black and white images saved in Grayscale format. Please note: Do NOT embed images into the text of your article. We cannot take digital images and increase the resolution. That process must be done at the time of digital origination (scanning, processing, etc.). Most images off of the Internet are 72 dpi and RGB format, therefore not adequate for print reproduction. Please be sure to appropriately name your images and identify each with a caption so it is not confused with other images. SUBMISSION METHOD All submissions of text and imagery should be sent (preferably together) to the attention of Editor Roland Mangold.
