From the Publisher By Roland Mangold Double-barreled EOM Ends Millennium With a Bang! The threat of disaster looms over all of us. However, the endeavor to prevent, avert, mitigate and recover from disasters has spawned a maelstrom of industries that have become intricately and inextricably intertwined in our economy and society. Industries such as insurance, construction, public safety, engineering, public works, myriad of government agencies have actually been borne out of our response to the threat of disaster. And so, considering the benefits the GeoTechnologies can bring to bear on the above industries and on disaster management, it is easy to imagine what tremendous growth lies ahead for this industry. In this issue of EOM, we take a look at a handful of examples of how the GeoTechnologies can be used in diverse disaster management applications. Also, attached to this issue is The EOM Greenbook 2000 - Who's Who in the GeoTechnologies - all you need to find anything you want in the GeoTechnologies! It can lead you to every type of software, data, information and service that can be sourced through the GeoTechnologies. Whether you are just getting into geo-spatial information or are a well established GIS user, this directory helps you find whatever you need from the GeoTechnologies - GIS, remote sensing, GPS, mapping, photogrammetry and aerial photography. The Greenbook does not contain every vendor in the industry. That would be well over a thousand, not counting all the government agencies and universities providing products and services in this industry. The organizations listed herein paid an advertising fee in order to let you know what they have to offer. They are the ones who consider it important enough to go to extra lengths to help you solve your geo-spatial information needs. They are the ones you should turn to for advice in your quest for geo-spatial minerva. Unfortunately, navigating one's way through the geo-spatial labyrinth is a daunting, confusing task for both novice and mapping veterans. The issues related to the successful implementation of any of these technologies are complicated at best. To any problem, there is a geo-spatial solution. And, that solution may solve anywhere from 10% to 100% of the problem, and there are a many of ways of coming to various forms of solutions to the same problem. Confusing? That is why our answer is "Educate yourself!" Talk to as many people as possible, read as much as you can, visit web sites, try samples, take courses but, start your journey with The Greenbook. Access Greenbook 2000 on the web at www.eomonline.com. I hope you enjoy this "double barreled" issue of EOM. I encourage any comments from readers on how we can make this publication of greater benefit. And, since this is the last issue for 1999, all of us at EOM wish you the very best for the holiday season and the coming millennium. Cheers!
