Nebraska Conservation Organization Selects ERDAS for Prairie Restoration Project
ERDAS IMAGINE(r) has been chosen by Prairie Plains Resource Institute (PPRI), a conservation organization based in Aurora, Nebr., to further ongoing prairie restoration, conservation, education and community development projects across the state. PPRI, created in 1980 to maintain and restore Nebraska's ecosystems for education, research, stewardship and community development, will use ERDAS IMAGINE to analyze spatial information over large areas and create informative, easy-to-interpret and visually appealing graphics.

PPRI is using ERDAS software in its current landscape-scale conservation project along the central Platte River corridor. This new project, the Platte River Corridor Initiative (PRCI), is an attempt to create a healthy balance of economic development, environmental protection and cultural stability within the river basin that connects the Nebraska cities of Grand Island and Columbus.

The central Platte River basin encompasses approximately 678,000 acres and is home to thousands of farmers, businesses and municipalities. Given the disparity in desires and goals among area inhabitants, it is often difficult to discuss management of river-related resources without some sort of graphic representation as a base. PPRI staff will use ERDAS software to perform landscape-scale analyses using satellite imagery and digital elevation models, and to develop presentation graphics in support of the Platte River Corridor Initiative.

As a wholly owned subsidiary of Leica Geosystems, ERDAS provides PC-based, multi-functional geographic imaging systems.

For further information please contact ERDAS, 2801 Buford Hwy NE, Atlanta, GA 30329. Tel: (404) 248-9000. E-mail: [email protected].

Integral Systems Announces New Satellite Image Processing Product
Newly available from Integral Systems Inc. is their SKYLIGHT product line, an off-the-shelf system for acquiring, processing and distributing satellite imagery. DeLorme's Flight Planning Software Now Available
DeLorme has created XMap PhotoFlight -- a software tool for aerial photographers, photogrammetrists and surveyors -- to quickly and automatically lay out accurate aerial photography flight plans that include flight lines, trigger points, and altitude. This product uses a corrected USGS digital elevation model (DEM) to accurately position flight lines and optimal photo trigger points for ensuring that the desired photo overlap will be achieved. As a result, XMap PhotoFlight creates an aerial photography mission plan over a specified geographic region.

Once the planner specifies a geographic polygon, flight-line bearing and photo scale, the XMap PhotoFlight application looks at the digital elevation data to determine the altitude and placement of each flight line to ensure the proper side-to-side overlap and scale. After the flight lines are set, trigger points for the photos are calculated. The elevation data is used again in the calculation to ensure that the proper overlap along the flight line is achieved. It includes features to help users generate block- and corridor flight plans, mark project boundaries by using advanced draw tools, or import shapefiles directly into the map.

DeLorme is a publisher of maps, atlases, and mapping software available in a wide variety of digital and paper formats.

For further information, please contact Kelly Gordon at DeLorme, Yarmouth, Maine. Tel: (207) 846-7111. E-mail: [email protected].

TRANSMAP(r) Delivers Roadway Asset Inventory for Arlington Heights
TRANSMAP(r) Corp. has completed an asset inventory project for the village of Arlington Heights, Ill. In less than two weeks, TRANSMAP field engineers captured digital images of roadway assets on 285 centerline miles, information that will be used to update the village's existing GIS that was generated from orthophotos. RADARSAT Maps Northern Colombia's Elevation
RADARSAT International (RSI) has delivered a detailed digital elevation model (DEM) of northern Colombia to its client, the National Imagery and Mapping Agency (NIMA) of the United States. This model, covering 777,152 square kilometers, is accurate to within 25-30 meters RMSE (root mean squared error). DEM data such as this can assist in applications including land-use planning, natural resource exploration, hydrologic modeling, flight safety, and line-of-sight determination for communications.

The DEM was derived from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data collected by the Canadian RADARSAT-1 Earth-observation satellite. Seventy-seven RADARSAT-1 stereo-pairs were used to create the elevation model, mapping the mountainous terrain of three ranges that run from north to south: Cordillera Occidental, Cordillera Central and Cordillera Oriental, with elevation changes of more than 4000 meters.

RADARSAT International is a worldwide provider of products and information solutions derived from Earth-observation (EO) satellite data.

ITRES Research Hired to Detect Pine Beetle in British Columbia Forests
The British Columbia Ministry of Forests has contracted ITRES Research Ltd to detect "green stage" attack that is caused by the notorious mountain pine beetle, an event wreaking havoc among pine forests throughout western North America. ITRES will acquire and analyze 90,000 hectares of CASI imagery in the western region of British Columbia, Canada.

ITRES will collect imagery by using its internally designed and produced hyperspectral CASI-2 sensor. For this program, the CASI-2 will generate 60cm-resolution imagery in 12 selected spectral bands. These data will be processed to generate radiometrically corrected and precision-georeferenced mosiacs.

Subsequent proprietary analysis will isolate large pine crowns from the background and other tree species and will then identify those stems at the "green stage" of mountain pine beetle attack. These results will be delivered prior to year's end so that the appropriate action can be taken to remove or destroy the attacked stems before the visible "red stage" develops and the beetles depart to attack a new set of pine trees.

For further information please contact ITRES Research Ltd., 3553 - 31st Street NW, Calgary, Alberta, Canada T2L 2K7. Tel: (403) 250-9944. E-mail: [email protected].
